Nazgol Emami (b. 1978, Tehran, Iran) is a German-Iranian film and theatre director and visual artist
based in Cologne, Germany. She studied Visual Communication at the University of Wuppertal and
Film and Media Arts at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM).
Her interdisciplinary practice unfolds between film, theatre, video, and visual art. Through
cinematic and performative approaches, she examines questions of identity, origin, power
structures, and social realities, often drawing on pop-cultural references. Her work has been shown
internationally.
Alongside her independent artistic practice, she directs for television, develops digital formats and
collaborates with cultural institutions, museums, and theatres. In recent years, her focus has
increasingly shifted towards research-driven and hybrid formats exploring collective memory,
vulnerability, and empowerment.
